Now Bill Gertz is chasing Bill Safire's scoop, reporting, "Despite French denials, U.S. intelligence and defense officials have confirmed that Iraq purchased from China a chemical used in making fuel for long-range missiles, with help from brokers in France and Syria." This confirms that China and France are defiantly NOT in the Axis of weasels. When the two Bills are hot on the trail of two aspects of the same story, watch out.

So, NOW they tell me that manual proofreading is more accurate than proofreading assisted by MS-Word. But, did they time the writers in the two groups? My guess (validated by the study) would have been that those relying on MS-Word were less accurate, but I bet they were also MUCH faster.

What if the broadcast spectrum were not really a scarce resource? What would change? Of course, change is probably impossible because regulators become captured by the industries they purport to regulate. Maybe legislators should have their staff read "The Theory of Economic Regulation," published in 1971 by Nobel laureate George Stigler and the later empirical research validating his thesis.

A former classmate of mine, Reuel Marc Gerecht, gets published in the NYT, and he has something to say.

Last week, I mentioned French arms sales to Iraq. Now, more evidence of arms sales in violation of the sacred UN sanctions. Who are the suspects? Why, the French and the Chinese, of course.

Nowhere near as audacious as the original Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace, but a much more useful guide showing the perils of misunderstanding it.

The NYT reports that the weapon is officially called the Massive Ordnance Air Blast, but the initials have already been recast to name it the "Mother of All Bombs". With all due respect (not to the NYT reporting, but to the DoD), I bet the official acronym was fitted to the unofficial one, rather than the other way around, especially since I first heard MOAB described as Massive Ordnance Air Burst. The two reported versions of the official name lead me to believe that the unofficial name was the more important from the beginning. For those of you with RealOne, here is the official DoD site.

Maybe Saddam is not the biggest threat to the world, but even Signe knows that human shields were diverting attention from him to us.

After our lovely china cabinet was delivered, my even-lovelier inamorata and I raced down to Baltimore to watch the second half of the Penn game. The Blue Jays won 14-5 at Homewood field under brilliant sunshine, about as perfect a day as possible in early March. The press release mentioned "Top-Ranked Hopkins", but after Virginia beat Princeton, no longer are we sharing the top ranking with Virginia. Quality wins count, and we will have our chance next week when we visit Syracuse.
