More than half-way through this "news" piece, College-Entrance Preferences for the Well Connected Draw Ire, the NYT admits that "the 30 legacies in the current freshman class posted an average SAT score (1389) that is 33 points higher than that of the class as a whole." So, really, just how much of a preference were the well-connected getting? Assuming the 33 points to be statistically significant, and the NYT to be not innumerate, maybe they would label the delta a negative preference. Otherwise, maybe they should write the headline "Legacies Face Discrimination".
