In Expanding Without Managing, a good NYT column despite being long on anecdotes and short on research, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld writes, "The academic research on diversified firms is unambiguous. They generally do not beat the market." As an investor, if I want a conglomerate, I can create one through my stock portfolio.
