Saturday, I accompanied TWO wonderful women: my inamorata and her darling niece. Her niece immediately found the best tree at Our Lady of the Rails (not really, probably St. Colman's) in Ardmore, seven feet tall, but five feet in diameter, with limbs so dense it was difficult to hang ornaments. We then had a wonderful lunch at what might become our regular place, Primavera Pizza Kitchen.
Seafood (shrimp, scallops, tuna, and salmon), brushed with olive oil and charcoal-grilled, on a stick, with risotto and cauliflower (broccoli would have been an improvement). Then shopping at Suburban Square, the oldest (and very upscale) suburban shopping mall in America. Good thing I was accompanied; at one store, I was the only guy. Then decorating the tree (tastefully, of course), and Mass. Not one Christmas Carol. Comeawwnow, gimmeabreak. It was December 22. We came back in time to catch my inamorata's niece again, this time returning from shopping with her mother. She read to me The Giving Tree; perhaps the saddest children's story I had ever heard. Fortunately, I recovered in time for an excellent Christmas party at the neighbour's. Rare roast beef, shrimp, and good merlot, and then a fine Bordeaux. The neighbour must have worked for hours for that party. Sunday, we exchanged gifts. I gave practical, whimsical, and silly. I got beautiful, thoughtful, and tasteful. Then headed for LI. Rushed a bit, but I could have made the 1:57 Amtrak, even had it not been posted as running five minutes late, and probably more like ten minutes late. Got two seats to myself, arrived in NYC about 15 minutes late, then dashed cross-town to the Hampton Jitney. Walking was good exercise (glad I pack light) and much faster than a cab (Herald Square, especially, was completely grid-locked). Anyway, made it from Penn Station to the Hampton Jitney stop at 40th and 3rd in less than 25 minutes. And got two seats by myself again, but much tighter typing. Evening of technology: - Added a new number to my parent's cell phone directory; - Programmed my mother's new universal remote control; and - Helped my father with dragging and dropping in his word processor, cutting and pasting to e-mail, and downloading pictures from e-mail.
